  • What is Occupational Therapy?
A simple definition of OT: Occupational therapy (OT) helps people participate in daily life to the fullest. OTs help you return to the life that you love. We recognize that an injury or illness can be devastating, and that a huge part of the healing process involves being able to participate in your daily life in ways that matter to you the most. Our role is to serve as your guide and your coach, by helping you establish your health and life goals—and then working with you to find the interventions, technology, and equipment that work best for YOU to get you where you want to be. Your OT works with you to find wellness and strength and to build upon that foundation. How does your OT help you?Our goal is always to make a long-term and tangible difference in your day-to-day life. We do this by helping you or your loved one(s) participate in the daily activities that you find meaningful. For an adult, this might mean being able to bake a treat for loved ones or feeling safe in the shower and avoiding falls. We OTs call these meaningful daily routines "activities of daily living" or “ADLs". These basic building blocks of daily life can become difficult after an injury, disability, or illness, and occupational therapy professionals help you develop the skills to participate in these activities with confidence. Here are some activities an OT can help with: Bathing and Showering | Toileting and Toilet Hygiene | Dressing | Eating and Swallowing | Feeding | Functional Mobility | Personal Device Care | Personal Hygiene and Grooming | Sexual Activity | Care of Others | Care of Pets | Child Rearing | Communication Management | Driving and Community Mobility | Financial Management | Health Management and Maintenance | Home Establishment and Maintenance | Meal Preparation and Clean Up | Religious and Spiritual Activities and Expressions | Safety Procedures and Emergency Responses | Shopping | Rest and Sleep | Education | Work | Play | Leisure | Social Participation
  • What is Aging-In-Place?
Aging in place is a lifestyle choice that describes a person living in the residence and community of their choice for as long as they are able, as they age. Most people prefer to live in their home and neighborhood for as long as possible rather than to move into congregate care, sometimes far away from friends, family and neighbors they're familiar with. In many ways, aging in place is healthier, safer and more affordable than moving into an assisted living or senior living facility. As aging in place advocates, we place a high value on the whole-person (holistic) benefits of aging in place, as they are evidence-based and backed by strong postivie health and longevity outcomes. Aging in place is not without its own set of concerns, but with expert insight, caring support and a good plan, it's absolutely possible to remain at home for the rest of your life.
  • What if I can't do some of the exercises?
We advise you to never push beyond what you're comfortable doing in any activity. If you ever experience pain, dizziness or shortness of breath, we advise you to cease the activity at that time. Sit in a safe spot, drink some water, rest and reach out for help, if needed. If you experience a health emergency. call your physician/healthcare provider or 911, immediately. Your OT will present a series of physical movements and activities designed to increase strength, flexibility, balance and range of motion. All of these activities will be presented to people with suggestions and instructions for modifications such as seated activities and less intense methods and/or fewer reps in order to accommodate people of varying strength and mobility capability. You will always be cautioned to "start low and go slow" when engaging in new physical activity. Over time, you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvements and gains you will make with practice and increased endurance. We love to get your questions and feedback! Post any concerns or experiences you want to share or any questions you have about the exercise segments in the Q & A Forum in our Community. Someone will answer your question and offer guidance soon. ______________________________________________________________________ The Home OT Daily program carries the following disclaimer (in part:) Disclaimer You should always consult your physician or other health care professional before starting this or any other health & fitness program to determine if it is right for your individual needs. • Do I need a special camera or microphone?
For most people, the camera and microphone on your laptop computer or smart phone will suffice for your participation in the Home OT Daily program, if you choose to use one to interact with others. "Going live" online is not required for full participation and enjoyment of Home OT Daily. For those that would like an enhanced experience, there are a number of reasonably-priced peripherals (cameras, lights, headphones) that help make any online community all the better. At the very least, if you're using a cell phone or tablet, you'll want a stand to place your phone or tablet on so that you can have your hands free and not strain your neck trying to watch the screen.
  • Do I need special lighting?
For chatting online and participating in forum activities, you'll want to be sure that you are sitting near a good light source and out of the shadows. Often, placing your seat near a window, or having a bright lamp on off to the side of where you're sitting is enough light. There are also several light rings on the market made specifically for online meetings, groups and telehealth. They provide the perfect light in all sorts of locations and weather to ensure that others can easily see your wonderful face! These are not very expensive and might be a great alternative to messing around with lamps and window shades!
  • Do I have to be on camera to join in?
You don't have to turn your camera on to participate, and there may be times when you'd rather not be in front of the camera. So, luckily our meeting software has a handy-dandy button you can click to turn off your camera, but leave your microphone open so you can still speak to and be heard by the group. But, please remember that your friends like to see your smiling face, just as much as you like to see theirs! So don't be too shy. There are how-to videos and tips in the TOGETHER AT HOME forums that can show you everything you need to know about managing your camera, microphone, lighting and more for online meetings. And as always, if you need help, just ask!
